If, after watching the first trailer for "Independence Day: Resurgence," you wondered what happened to Will Smith's character from the original film, a new promotional website has the answer.

Launched by Fox in conjunction with the trailer, Warof1996.com offers an interactive timeline that fills in the gaps between the 1996 blockbuster and the upcoming sequel. Scrolling to 2007, we see that Smith's Col. Steven Hiller was killed while "test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter."

"Hiller’s valor in the War of ‘96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership led directly to the enemy’s defeat," the entry reads. "He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.” Vivica A. Fox reprises her role as Jasmine in the sequel, while Jessie Usher plays Dylan.

The studio also released a video to promote the website, narrated by Jeff Goldblum’s David Levinson. Watch it below.

Directed by Roland Emmerich, "Independence Day: Resurgence" also stars Liam Hemsworth, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. The film opens June 24.
