According to writer-producer Brad Bird, "The Incredibles 2" is well underway. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he refused to spill any plot details, but did offer a small update on the sequel to the original 2004 film.

“It’s very actively moving, and we’re excited about it,” he shared. “[We’re] trying to take it in some new directions.”

“Hopefully it’s the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction,” he added. “I mean, that’s the trick with a sequel. It’s repeating yourself, without repeating yourself.”

Back in 2004, the original "Incredibles" movie was part of a very different cinematic landscape, where the "X-Men" franchise was just getting started and Tobey Maguire played Spider-Man. Now, superhero films are the king of the box office, with movies like "Captain America: Civil War" raking in over $1 billion at the international box office.

When "Incredibles 2" hits theaters on June 21, 2019, it will go up against a host of new superhero films: "Captain Marvel," "Shazam," the "Justice League" sequel, and the fourth "Avengers" movie, which are all also slated for release that year.
