Many games use mythology from various cultures to help tell their story, but the classic Greek mythology is probably the most popular. Immortals: Fenyx Rising has especially deep roots, even competing with God of War. It's enriching to have a bit more knowledge on the subject they're based on and can be illuminating to the story. This may be particularly important to Fenyx Rising as players explore a mythological Greek land.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising has many Greek mythological creatures, Gods and more -- too many for us to possibly cover them all. Instead, here are some of the more important or notable characters you'll encounter on Fenyx's journey.

Zeus

Perhaps the most iconic of the Greek pantheon, Zeus is the God of Lightning and ruler of the Greek Gods. He has a ton of children, most of whom are also famous Gods like Apollo and Aphrodite. His siblings, including Hades and Poseidon, are equally well-known. Something you may not have known is that he played a key role in a war against the Titans, the previous ruling Gods in Greek mythology. Zeus struck down his father, a Titan, and took over as ruler. This angered his mother, Gaia, who sent the Giants to avenge her children. This started yet another war, but Zeus and his fellow Olympians defeated the Giants as well.

Prometheus

While Zeus and Prometheus have some comical commentary in-game, the two didn't get along in Greek mythos. Prometheus continually challenged Zeus and was often punished for it. He most famously gave fire to humanity, although some stories indicate Prometheus actually returned fire after Zeus stole it from humans. Prometheus himself is a Titan but defected with his brother to Zeus' side during the war. It wasn't until afterward he started getting into trouble. Prometheus pulled plenty of shenanigans with Zeus after the Titan war, so it'll be interesting to see how it's played out in-game.

Typhon

Typhon was a monster created by Gaia, Zeus' mother, to avenge her children after they were killed in the Titan war. However, some sources say Typhon is the son of Hera, Zeus' wife and sister. Either way, Typhon is one of the strongest monsters and known as the father of all monsters in Greek mythology. His children include Cerebus and the Hydra, which makes sense considering Typhon also has 100 serpent heads. He was a formidable opponent even for Zeus but was ultimately defeated and sent to Tartarus, an abyss that's basically a hell-like prison. There are many different versions of this battle, with some ending with Typhon buried under a volcano in Sicily or other volcanic islands.

Hermes

Another name you may recognize, Hermes is the herald of the Gods and an incredibly fast messenger thanks to his winged sandals. Hermes is one of Zeus' many sons and has also been associated with merchants, travelers, commerce and thieves. That last bit is even portrayed in-game as he steals the main character's bracers. He's also one of the only Gods who can cross between the land of the living and the dead, which makes sense since he's a messenger. We'll likely be seeing him a lot in-game as he relays information to the character from the Gods. While he's generally considered good, he's also known for being deceptive and something of a trickster.

Aphrodite

Known for her beauty, Aphrodite is the Goddess of love, pleasure and fertility. Like Zeus, she gets around and is something of a flirty gal. She even had her own cult, although it's not as awful as the term implies. Aphrodite's looks caused chaos in the pantheon because every God wanted her for themselves. Zeus ended up marrying her off to the ugliest god in the pantheon, Hephaestus, to settle the unrest, except it didn't exactly work out. She sought out lovers, both immortal and mortal, and had several children. This, of course, caused problems with her husband seeking revenge and many other troubles befalling her lovers. Considering all this, she's a little underwhelming in-game from what we've seen.

Achilles

Achilles wasn't a God but rather an iconic Greek hero. His mother, a sea-nymph, was worried about his well-being as a child, knowing he would take part in a war. To protect him, she bathed him in the River of Styx as an infant, but she missed his heel. He wasn't quite immortal but could stand blows normal mortals wouldn't have been able to. He was raised mainly by Chiron, a Centaur, and was a great warrior in the Trojan War and even fought lesser Gods. Achilles was done in by an arrow to the heel by a prince's brother, although the arrow was said to have been guided by Apollo.

Odysseus

Another legendary hero of renown, you may recognize Odysseus from Homer's epic The Odyssey. Despite not wishing to, Odysseus famously fought in the Trojan War and then found himself on an epic adventure while trying to return home afterward. While he initially wasn't as close to the gods as Achilles, he is a descendant of Hermes, though this relationship is removed from later stories because authors didn't like portraying Odysseus as a trickster. His journey took him through many trials, and it will be interesting to see if Fenyx must do the same to reach him.
