April Fool’s Day is nearly upon us, and, in celebration of the one day out of the year where it’s totally okay for social media to be gummed up with weird announcements and bizarre news, Image Comics has gotten into the holiday spirit and revealed several mashup variant covers for the company’s biggest series. The covers draw inspiration from some of the biggest names in the comic book industry.
The variants are part of the publisher’s yearlong 25th anniversary celebration, the theme for April being April Fool’s Day. So far, Image has released art for eight of the planned 11 variant covers, including “Rock Candy Mountain,” “Sons of the Devil,” “Plastic,” “Invincible,” “I Hate Fairyland,” “The Fix,” “Curse Words,” “Black Science,” and “Rock Candy Mountain,” with covers for “Spawn,” “East of West” and “Savage Dragon” still incoming.
The April Fool’s variants are the third batch of monthly themed covers celebrating the publisher’s anniversary, which officially began on February 1, 2017. The February cover variants paid tribute to the publisher’s most iconic covers of all time, with various Image artists putting their own unique spin on the famous art. The March variants celebrated not only the publisher’s anniversary, but also Women’s History Month, focusing on female characters in Image Comics throughout the years. All proceeds from the sales of March’s special variants were donated to the nonprofit organization Planned Parenthood.
Image Comics has been celebrating its 25th anniversary for some time now. In November of last year, the publisher announced that it would sell certain new issues for only 25 cents. Earlier this month, nearly all the Image Comics founders appeared on a panel at the Seattle-based Emerald City Comicon to answer questions and sign posters, sans Jim Lee.
The publisher has not yet announced the theme for its May variants, but the April variants will roll out through the month. The “Rock Candy Mountain” and “Sons of the Devil” variants will be available April 5. “Spawn” will be available April 12. “Black Science,” “Curse Words,” “East of West,” “The Fix,” “I Hate Fairyland,” “Invincible” and “Plastic” will be available April 19. “Savage Dragon” will be available April 26.
Image Comics was founded February 1, 1992 by Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, Marc Silvestri, Rob Liefeld and Whilce Portacio. Since its inception, Image Comics has focused on creator-owned works, a concept that allows comic book creators to retain the copyrights to their franchises. The publisher is best known for producing series like “Witchblade,” “The Darkness” and “The Walking Dead.”
