If There Were Any Doubts, Nolan Says No Again to Fourth Batman

If there were fans of Christopher Nolan still holding on to hope that the director might be coaxed back for one more Batman film, they can let go now. It definitely isn’t happening.

Asked about the possibility Saturday at the Producers Guild of America’s “Produced By” conference, Variety reports Nolan reiterated he had always envisioned the story as a trilogy — Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises — and said, “I don’t want to hold anything back [for a fourth film].”

“I explained the potential of what was exciting to me,” he said, recalling why he pitched Batman Begins to Warner Bros. nearly a decade ago. “There really had not been an origin story about this extraordinary figure in an ordinary world.”

Nolan also credited fans with helping him to guide the franchise, adding, “You’re really working with something that belongs to the audience.”

Of course, the director isn’t walking away from Batman entire after The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20: He and wife Emma Thomas are expected to remain as producers when Warner Bros. “reinvents” the franchise.

The conclusion of Nolan’s Batman trilogy stars Christian Bale as Batman, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Tom Hardy as Bane, Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake, Michael Caine as Alfred, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.
