Official Press Release
San Diego, CA, June 16, 2004-IDW Publishing, known for innovative products and merchandising, has produced a mini-comic version of its Underworld movie adaptation one-shot. The mini comic has been inserted as an extra with the Underworld 2-disc Unrated Extended Cut DVD, released on May 25, 2004.
In Underworld, vampires are a very secretive clan of modern, urbane sophisticates whose sworn enemies are the Lycans, street-wise, thuggish werewolves that run the underside of the city. These very different clans clash when an almost “Romeo and Juliet” connection happens between the beautiful young female vampire and the rougher young werewolf male. Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman star in the action/fantasy/horror film.
IDW’s faithful adaptation of the hit motion picture, written by Kris Oprisko with art by Nick Postic and Nick Marinkovich, was a very popular item when it was released simultaneously with the film last fall. It spawned a prequel miniseries written by Oprisko and Danny McBride, who wrote the screenplay for the film. The original adaptation, published as a 48-page, prestige format one-shot, was reduced in size to fit into the DVD box, but all the content remains. In addition, the Comic Shop Locator Service information was included so that Underworld fans would know where to find more comic books.
“We’re always looking for new and different ways to spread the word about comics,” IDW’s Editor-in-Chief, Jeff Mariotte, said. “When this opportunity presented itself, we immediately recognized the value-not just to IDW, but to the entire comic book community. Underworld contains many of the same elements that make comics so popular-a rich visual style, an exciting storyline, lots of action and thrills-so it makes sense that Underworld fans might be drawn to comics. By including the CSLS number we’ve made it easy for them to take the next step.”
The Underworld mini-comic is only available with the Underworld 2-disc unrated extended cut DVD.
