“Despite some delays we are fully back on track and very excited to get started,” Jackson said in an announcement from 3Foot7 Ltd., the production company for The Hobbit.
Filming of the two-movie Lord of the Rings prequel will take place at Stone Street Studios in Miramar, New Zealand — the facilities previously were used by Jackson for LOTR and King Kong — and on location around the country.
Published in 1937, J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy novel The Hobbit follows the home-loving halfling Bilbo Baggins, who joins a band of dwarves in a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its fabled treasure from the dragon Smaug.
Jackson’s adaptation stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, and features returning Lord of the Rings actors Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchett. Other cast include Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter, Rob Kazinsky, Aidan Turner, Peter Hambleton, John Callen, Jed Brophy, Mark Hadlow, Adam Brown, Mikael Persbrant and Sylvester McCoy.
The two films will be released in December 2012 and December 2013.
