Historic Hal Foster TV appearance to be shown at Mid-Ohio-Con

Official Press Release

[Hal Foster]

Author Brian M. Kane made one incredible find after another while researching his biography on one of the greatest comic illustrators of all time, Hal Foster. Not only was Foster’s family able to supply Kane with over 70 pounds of photo albums, scrapbooks, memoirs, and art, they also provided him with the original film of Foster’s 1954, appearance on the Television show “This is Your Life”. With the help of Syracuse University, Kane made arrangements to have the film completely restored and transferred to VHS tape. While photos from Foster’s appearance on the show are in the book there was no way Kane could share this historic discovery with the public, until now.

With the help of Mid-Ohio-Con, “This is Your Life Hal Foster” will be seen in its entirety for the first time in almost 50 years. The comic book and pop culture show, held in Columbus, Ohio on November 24th & 25th will set aside some time in its schedule to air the 30-minute show complete with period commercials. Roger Price, producer of Mid-Ohio-Con said, “We are really thrilled to have this incredible and historic opportunity.” Kane will also be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of his book, Hal Foster: Prince of Illustrators: Father of the Adventure Strip.

Some of the material which will be printed in the book for the first time includes an extremely rare specialty color Tarzan illustration that Hal did for his best friend’s son, cartoons of Hal’s 1915 canoe trip Honeymoon with his wife, Helen, advertising art from the 1920s, many of his Mountie paintings, the original Western Union telegram sealing the deal for the Prince Valiant strip, photos of Hal with Milton Berle, Babe Ruth, the cast of the Prince Valiant movie and many others, and a wealth of artwork which he did just for his family. After reading an advanced copy for his upcoming review in Comic Book Marketplace, noted Edgar Rice Burroughs historian, Robert R. Barrett commented, “The book went beyond even my expectations. It is just great! For years, possibly forever, it will be the best, most definitive biography of Hal Foster!”

The 8 ½ x 11, 208-page biography is being published by Vanguard Productions and contains over 350 b&w photos and illustrations and 50 color illustrations. The regular hardcover edition is priced at $29.95, but there is also a Deluxe s/n hardcover edition, which comes in a gold-embossed slipcase and is limited to 1,000 copies that are signed by both Brian M. Kane and legendary artist, James Bama, who supplied the Introduction for the book. The Deluxe Edition is $49.95 and also comes with an additional 16 pages that contains all of Foster’s art for his adaptation of “The Song of Bernadette”, which hasn’t been reprinted in its entirety in almost 25 years.

Mid-Ohio-Con will be Saturday & Sunday, November 24 & 25 at the Hilton Columbus in Easton Town Center, Columbus, Ohio. Advance tickets are available exclusively through Ticketweb.com, or charge by phone at 866-468-3401.
