Monday’s announcement that Warner Bros. plans to remake the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie without Joss Whedon met with near-universal displeasure, or at least disbelief — from Buffy fandom, from actor David Boreanaz and from Whedon himself. But there’s at least one person excited by the prospect: Kristy Swanson, star of the original and, until recently, largely ignored movie.
“If they wanted me to be a part of it, I think that would be fantastic and that it would be a blast,” the 40-year-old actress told EW.com.
Swanson, who was 22 when she originated the role of cheerleader turned vampire killer Buffy Summers, recalls that she reacted positively to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s take on the character some seven years later.
A representative for Beverly Hills 90210 star Luke Perry, who played Buffy’s love interest Oliver Pike in the original movie, said the actor had no comment. Presumably no one asked Paul Reubens or Rutger Hauer for their opinions.
Swanson’s post-Buffy film career has been spotty at best, with the high point probably being the 1994 Charlie Sheen comedy The Chase. In recent years she’s appeared in episodes of CSI: Miami, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and One Tree Hill, and guest-starred in the web series 3Way.
