Last month, to the surprise of many, Mike Mignola announced that an R-rated Hellboy reboot starring Stranger Things actor David Harbour was underway. While Ron Perlman — who originally brought the character to life in the 2004 film — won’t be returning, Harbour seems to share a love for the character and has been actively teasing the project on social media since it was announced. Now, in an Instagram post, he revealed that he’s currently being fit for Hellboy’s Right Hand of Doom.
A filming date has not yet been revealed, but — with a completed script by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Mignola — the film appears to be moving quickly towards pre-production, indicating that shooting may not be too far off.
While this is arguably Harbour’s biggest role to date, this isn’t the actor’s first time in a comic book film. The actor previously appeared in a minor role in last year’s Suicide Squad, as well as 2011’s The Green Hornet. Prior to landing the Hellboy gig, Harbour was in the running for the role of Cable in Deadpool 2, although that role eventually ended up going to Avengers: Infinity War star Josh Brolin. Harbour currently stars on Netflix’s critically acclaimed series Stranger Things.
Neil Marshall (The Descent) will direct the reboot, which will be a much darker and more gruesome film than the two before it. The film, which is tentatively titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, does not have a release date at this time.
