Hellboy 2, Queen & Country, Zoom, Iron Man: The Comic Reel Wrap for June 21st

Actress Selma Blair told Sci Fi Wire that Mike Mignola’s characters will go back in front of the camera in less than two years. I just did ‘The Fog’ with Revolution, and I was trying to pick their brains for when ‘Hellboy’ will go,” Blair said. “Apparently [director] Guillermo [del Toro]’s supposed to hand in a script any minute. I know there will probably be a long preproduction, so we’ll probably start maybe January 2007.”

Ain’t It Cool News is bandying about a rumor about Greg Rucka’s British spy stories coming to the big screen. Apparently one of their scoopers caught the writer at a signing in Seattle, where Rucka “et slip that Fox Searchlight had just exercised its option on his ‘Queen and Country’ series and that it was currently under development at Fox. He also mentioned that although he had offered his input, he wasn’t going to be directly involved with the development.”

According to Variety (subsription required), 20th Century Fox and partner Marvel Enterprises have filed suit against Sony Pictures Entertainment and Revolution Studios, alleging that their upcoming Zoom is confusingly similar to “X-Men.” The lawsuit also notes that the graphic novel upon which the film is based — “Zoom’s Academy for the Super Gifted,” by Jason Lethcoe — was not strikingly similar to “X-Men,” but claims that the script has become a near-copy. Fox also has problems with the fact that Sony/Revolution are planning to release Zoom next May 12, just two weeks before “X-Men 3” comes out. Sony/Revolution were previously planning to release Zoom August 2006, but moved the date to May a week after Fox announced its bow date for “X3.” “‘Zoom’s’ release in May 2006 immediately before the release of ‘X3’ (or any release in proximity to the release of ‘X3’) is an unfair attempt by Sony and Revolution to manipulate the market and trade off the time, energy, resources and effort Marvel have invested in ‘X-Men,'” the lawsuit states.

Marvel’s movie mogul Avi Arad talked to MTV and gave updates on the Armored Avengers, “Captain America” and more. “Arad says Marvel is ‘very close’ to striking a deal for the long-discussed ‘Iron Man’ movie. ‘It’s been a war with [co-producers] New Line Cinema. I had a four-hour meeting with [‘The Notebook’ director] Nick Cassavetes in my house. If everything is cool, in the next few weeks there’ll be an announcement about Nick writing it. Nick has a unique emotional attachment to Iron Man’s alter ego, Tony Stark. Think about John [Cassavetes] and Nick, father and son – the father was a great visionary director, and here’s the son, an actor and a writer and turned out to be a very gifted artist himself.’ The parallel with Iron Man/ Tony Stark, who in the comic books has issues dealing with the success of his own father, evidently pleased Arad.”

The article also notes “‘There is a director who should make ‘Silver Surfer’ — he is mentally committed to it. He’s doing another movie now. What’s most important to me about this guy, first, is that he’s incredible with visuals. But he’s also a spiritual guy, a Zen Buddhist.’ Arad also confirms that the enormous planet devourer Galactus will be in the movie, but chances are he’ll be all-CGI. ‘Galactus is a force of nature, not a being. That’s all I’m saying.'”

Also look for actor Dylan Baker to return as a pre-scaly Dr. Kurt Connor, that Arad wants Ian McKellen in the “Magneto” spin off, that Johnny Blaze will face a huge tidal wave and much more.
