Hasbro has provided some clarification following the announcement that the Mr. Potato Head toy was going gender-neutral and being rebranded as just "Potato Head."

"Hold that Tot – your main spud, MR. POTATO HEAD isn’t going anywhere!" the company tweeted. "While it was announced today that the POTATO HEAD brand name & logo are dropping the ‘MR.’ I yam proud to confirm that MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD aren’t going anywhere and will remain MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD" The tweet includes images of the packaging for both Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head toys that bear the Potato Head branding at the top and the Mr. and Mrs. prefixes in the descriptions on the lower-left.

"Culture has evolved," Hasbro Senior Vice President and General Manager Kimberly Boyd said when the rebranding was announced. "Kids want to be able to represent their own experiences. The way the brand currently exists—with the 'Mr.' and 'Mrs.'—is limiting when it comes to both gender identity and family structure."

The original Mr. Potato Head toy launched in 1952 and has since become a cultural icon. Most notably, the toy became a character in its own right in Disney and Pixar's Toy Story films.
