Han Solo: Donald Glover Reveals Billy Dee Williams’ Advice on Lando

Donald Glover has revealed the short but sweet piece of advice that Billy Dee Williams relayed when they discussed how he should play the younger version of Lando Calrissian in the as-yet-untitled Han Solo solo anthology film.

“I was like, ‘I’ve always felt like this character could do this, and he represents this, and I kind of feel like he comes from here, and it’s very obvious he has a lot of taste, so maybe he grew up seeing that from afar? Because I’m like that. Maybe he saw it from other planets and was like, ‘I want to be that,'” Glover told The Hollywood Reporter. “He just let me ramble on and on, and then finally I was like, ‘So, what do you think?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, I don’t know about all that. Just be charming.'”

That shouldn’t be a problem for the multi-talented actor and rapper, who has made waves over the last few years in shows like Community, the animated Spider-Man series and Atlanta. However, the space-pirate flick about Han Solo’s younger years will be Glover’s biggest role to date and is one he admits has been quite challenging, especially with directors Chris Lord and Phil Miller being swapped out for Ron Howard.

“I feel like I was the baby in the divorce, or the youngest child,” said Glover in reference to Lord and Miller’s split. However, he described Howard as “such a legend” and added that “[Howard] knows exactly what the vision for what he is doing is.” Glover admitted that he was apprehensive in the early stages when Howard came on board because Lord and Miller hired him to play Calrissian and he wondered if he was what Howard envisioned in the role. “[Phil and Chris] hired us, so you sort of feel like, ‘I know I’m not your first choice …’ And you worry about that,” he stated.

Based on a script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, the Han Solo film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Michael K. Williams and Woody Harrelson. The as-yet-untitled movie arrives in theaters on May 25, 2018.
