You likely don't know H. Jon Benjamin's face, but you definitely recognize his voice. The man behind Archer's Sterling Archer also plays Bob on Bob's Burgers, The Master on The Venture Bros., Carl on Family Guy and was Coach John McGuirk on Home Movies. That's quite an array of memorable characters.

It turns out Benjamin is just as funny when he's unscripted. Spinoff Online sat in on a conference call with the voice actor while he was promoting the new season of FX’s Archer, and he was as busy cracking jokes at unsuspecting reporters as he was actually answering questions about the series.

As viewers saw in the Season 4 premiere, there was a bit of a crossover between Archer and Bob's Burgers. "Adam Reed, the creator of the show, had the idea to do it," Benjamin explained. "Apparently, he was a fan of Bob’s Burgers and mine. So he came up with the idea to do it. He asked me to ask Loren Bouchard, the creator of Bob’s Burgers, so I was like the middle man, but it went really smoothly."

While there haven't been that many changes in Archer's character over the years, Benjamin seems to want to take the character in an It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia direction and have his lifestyle finally catch up to him.

"I just like feel like I want him to gain, like, 15 pounds, like he won’t metabolize alcohol as well or something soon," Benjamin said. "He is pretty rock-solid, appearance-wise. That doesn’t change. Maybe he’s gotten in better shape. I haven’t checked under the shirt."

In terms of what's coming up this season, Benjamin teased there is more to Archer's new stepfather Ron Cadillac than there seems. Because of Archer's "oedipal inclinations," Benjamin said he feels that "no matter who filled in for the father role, [Archer will] want to kill him." He also promised a "grand story that takes place underwater" for the two-part season finale. And where does he want to take the show after that? Middle-Earth, of course.

The best question of the call came when Benjamin was asked whether Archer had improved his sex life at all. "Yes, I have not had sex now in four and a half years, so it’s an improvement," he replied. "If you knew how I had sex, yes, not having it is one step above."

We also couldn't resist asking Benjamin if there had ever been any discussion of him doing a voice on Brendon Smalls' Metalocalypse. The two worked together on Home Movies, but Benjamin said they've never talked about collaborating on this show.

"I don’t think he’s ever asked. We don’t speak very much -- not because we don’t get along, just because we’ve lost touch. But I’m sure I would be happy to do it," he said. "Put a word in."

Archer airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
