Guy Ritchie Would Have Loved to Direct Suicide Squad 2

Although a divisive film, “Suicide Squad” grossed an impressive $745 million worldwide, leading Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel. But while the bad guys turned heroes will return, they will do so without writer/director David Ayer, who’s busy with the planned “Gotham Sirens” spinoff. Plenty of names have been floated to succeed Ayer, with at least one glaring omission: Guy Ritchie, who says he would have loved a shot at “Suicide Squad 2.”

While promoting Warner Bros.’ “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” the filmmaker seemed to hint he was approached about the “Suicide Squad” sequel before he signed on to Disney’s live-action “Aladdin.” Ritchie, whose credits include “Sherlock Holmes,” “Snatch” and “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” told Variety he would “quite fancy” directing the DC Extended Universe sequel, had his schedule permitted.

“I quite fancy doing ‘Suicide Squad 2,’ because I thought I could do a good job with it,” he said. “I can’t do it because I’m doing something else. But I’ve felt I could really do something with that.”

No director is attached to “Suicide Squad 2,” although rumored candidates include David S. Goyer (“Man of Steel,” “Krypton”), Jaume Collet-Serra (“The Shallows”) and, of course, Mel Gibson. “The Legend of Tarzan” screenwriter Adam Cozad is penning the script. No release date has been announced.
