Guggenheim & Pacheco’s “Squadron Sinister” Swings into “Warzones” for “Secret Wars”

Marvel.com has announced a “Squadron Sinister” series from writer Marc Guggenheim and artist Carlos Pacheco that will take place in “Secret Wars'” “Warzones.”

“The version of Squadron Sinister I am doing is very, very close to the original version of Squadron Sinister,” Guggenheim explained. “They started out as, essentially, this JLA analogue to fight the Avengers. So those early stories were the Avengers versus a version of the Justice League that were all villains, which is really cool. So I’m running with that concept.”

The writer’s Squadron Sinister will be comprised of Hyperion, Nighthawk, Whizzer, Doctor Spectrum and Warrior Woman, all of whom — with the exception of Warrior Woman — appeared on the original team in “Avengers” #69 and #70.

“Hyperion, who is the baron of Utopolis, is getting it from all sides,” Guggenheim revealed. “On the one hand, he’s got this level of autonomy. On the other hand, when you are on the top, there are always people who want to take you down.

“It’s very much in keeping with a crime drama,” Guggenheim continued. “A lot of my touchstones were the ‘Godfather’ movies and ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ ‘The Sopranos.’ You know, that very criminal centric drama that shows that heavy is the head that wears the crown.”

“Squadron Sinister” kicks off this spring.
