Stan Lee has got a friend in the Watchers, at least in a new behind-the-scenes photo from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Director James Gunn shared the image on his Instagram, which shows the Marvel Comics legend having a laugh with Gunn, a Watcher stand-in and the crew.

"With [Stan Lee] and a pre-VFX Watcher on set and me geeking out as usual," Gunn wrote on the post.

Lee appeared in two scenes in the movie, and both times he was accompanied by the Watchers, a group of advanced aliens who watch the events of the universe unfold without ever interfering. During the film, Lee can be spotted recounting his adventures to the Watchers as Rocket, Groot, Yondu and Kraglin make a series of jumps through space. In this particular scene, he tells them about the time he was a FedEx man, per the events of Captain America: Civil War, which seems to suggest that he plays the same character in every one of his cameo roles.

Lee also got an end-credits sequence all to himself. At the very end of the credits, the Watchers take their leave of him, while he calls after them to let them know he has more stories. As they walk off screen, Lee informs them that they were his ride and dejectedly says, "Aw, jeez!"

"Stan Lee clearly exists, you know, above and apart from the reality of all the films. So the notion that he could be sitting there on a cosmic pit stop during the jump gate sequence in Guardians was something very fun – James had that idea and we shot that cameo and loved it so much, you know, you see it a couple of times in the movie. It wasn’t in for a long time and we put it back in towards the end of the process where he references that time he was a Federal Express agent – we thought it would be fun to put that in there because that really says, so wait a minute, he’s this same character who’s popped up in all these films," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained shortly after the film's release.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Glenn Close as Irani Rael and Kurt Russell as Ego. The movie is now available on digital download, DVD and Blu-Ray.
