We previously saw Kurt Russell's Ego the Living Planet only in toy form, but this newly surfaced promotional art for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" merchandise now offers the honest-to-goodness first look at the character in costume.

Unearthed by ComicBookMovie from what appears to be a Snapchat story, the photo shows the veteran actor in the space-traveler costume unveiled in July by Marvel Studios at Comic-Con International in San Diego. As we can see, that Marvel Legends action figure captures his likeness fairly well.

Although Russell's character plays a central role in the Marvel Studios sequel, writer/director James Gunn has assured the discovery that he's Star-Lord's father isn't the film's big revelation.

“It really is about the story between the different characters, and so it’s not about that reveal," he said. "It’s not about there’s this big shock moment. We’re probably all going to know by the time the movie comes out. It happens pretty close to the beginning of the film. It’s not something we reveal at the end of the film. So it’s something that’ll come out eventually.”

Instead, Gunn explained, “I think the primary story is really about learning that thing that we think we want, that we’re going to get outside of ourselves and outside of these relationships that we have, has been there all along."

Set just months after the events of Marvel’s 2014 hit, the sequel follows the Guardians of the Galaxy as they travel throughout the cosmos and struggle to keep their newfound family together, all while helping Peter Quill learn more about his true parentage.

Arriving in theaters May 5, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Glenn Close as Irani Rael and Kurt Russell as Ego.
