Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2: James Gunn Reveals Ego’s Powers

by  in Movie News Comment

Aside from his appearance in the last “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” trailer, not much is known about Kurt Russell’s Ego the Living Planet — other than the fact that he is Star-Lord’s father, of course. Ego is a literal living planet in the Marvel comics, while on the big screen he’s about the size of a human being. In an interview with Complex, director James Gunn revealed how this drastic difference came to be in the film.

“Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways he’s been alone for millions of years and he’s learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell,” Gunn explained. “I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill’s mother.”

From this description, it sounds like Peter Quill is the offspring of an Ego avatar and not the humongous planet himself, which makes you wonder how the genetics work in a situation like this. Perhaps there is a chance we will get to see Ego in his planetary glory after all.

Written and directed by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2″ stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and franchise newcomer, Kurt Russell, who plays Star-Lord’s father – Ego, the Living Planet. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” arrives in theaters May 5.
