SDCC: Grant Morrison & Chris Burnham Reunite For Arkham Asylum 2

Grant Morrison will reunite with his Batman Incorporated collaborator Chris Burnham for Arkham Asylum 2.

Announced this afternoon during DC Comics’ “Meet the Publishers” panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, the 122-page story will focus on an adult Damian Wayne as Batman. Morrison jokingly characterized the story as what he would write if he wanted to jump the shark.

Morrison with artist Andy Kubert introduced an adult Damian in 2007’s Batman #666, which depicted a dark possible future in which the former Robin strikes a deal with the Devil after he’s unable to prevent Dick Grayson’s death: his soul in exchange for the immortality he requires to protect Gotham City from evil. That story also finds Damian pursued by Police Commissioner Barbara Gordon, and at odds with the so-called Third Batman, an apocalyptic figure determined to bring about Armageddon. The Damian from that alternate timeline has appeared in subsequent stories.

It’s unknown how, or if, Arkham Asylum 2 will mesh thematically with Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth, Morrison’s 1989 graphic novel with Dave McKean in which Batman is called upon to meet with the inmates of the psychiatric hospital, who have taken control of the facility and threatened to kill the staff. Once there, the Dark Knight is forced into a game of hide and seek in which he’s hunted by some of his most notorious foes.

No release date has been announce for Arkham Asylum 2.
