Anyone wondering which villain would ultimately rise in Season 2 of "Gotham" now has their answer: Mr. Freeze. The cool, cruel Batman foe made a brief appearance a the tail end of the series fall finale.

The reveal had little to do with the season's overarching plot to date, rather serving as a setup for the show's 2016 return, but check out the full rundown of the episode with CBR's recap.

Of course, the existence of the ice-blasting villain has been known since the network teased the casting of Mr. Freeze's ill-fated wife Nora earlier this year, though the full-on emergence of the bad guy complete with cold gun is an unexpected twist.

Created by Bob Kane, David Wood and Sheldon Moldoff in 1959's "Batman" #121, the villain originally called Mr. Zero was a late addition to Batman's earliest rogue's gallery. Though he sat in obscurity for years, the villain was revived as part of the late '60s "Batman" TV series, however the most influential revision of Mr. Freeze (and the one "Gotham" seems to be drawing from) is the tragic take created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm in "Batman: The Animated Series."

"Gotham" returns this February to Fox.
