As if the relationship between young Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle on "Gotham" weren't already complicated enough, their dynamic will "evolve" as the series returns next week for its third season.

Camren Bicondova, who plays Selina "Cat" Kyle, tells TVLine their relationship is "is going to evolve into a more teenage relationship, instead of a middle school thing."

So far, audiences have seen the two endure some harrowing situations, grow closer, gain a semblance of trust and respect, and develop what some might consider the groundwork for a tumultuous future romance. Having that bond mature seems like an obvious step as the story advances and the characters grow up.

However, Selina will face yet another complication as someone from her past unexpectedly re-enters her life. "Selina gets to meet a family member that's very dear to her heart—her mom," Bicondova said, "and that doesn't really go the way she expected it to."

In various versions of her origin story, the death of Selina's mother has been the impetus for her turn to the streets and descent into a life of crime. Her mother was presumed dead on "Gotham" as well, but Selina had been holding out hope that she was still alive. Apparently, this reunion will not be all that she had hoped for.

"Gotham" kicks off its third season Monday, Sept. 19, on Fox.
