The Gotham season 3 finale brought some big changes for all the characters. Some of these changes might be for real, while others will quickly be reversed. Several characters “died” on screen who are definitely going to come back. Thankfully, the cast and crew aren’t even trying to pretend that these are real deaths, so we have a solid idea of who’s returning next season. Similarly, there were huge betrayals in the season 3 finale, but on a show like Gotham relationships can be repaired after almost anything. One guarantee is that Gotham season 4 will shake up the show’s alliances and bring some unexpected turns.

RELATED: The 15 Most Annoying Plot Holes In Gotham

There’s a lot of new info floating around about the new season, especially since San Diego Comic-Con. Some of this information has been confirmed, while others have only been hinted at by the cast and crew. A lot of the plot turns that have been hinted at are so damn tantalizing we’ll be very disappointed if they turn out to only be rumors. (Yes, we’re talking about getting to see Bruce Wayne become full-fledged Batman). Here are eight things we know for sure about the fourth season of Gotham, plus seven rumors we hope are true.

15 FACT: TITLES FOR FIVE EPISODES

Making the rounds are five confirmed episode titles for the new season. These are: “The Fear Reaper,” “They Who Hide Behind Masks,” “The Demon’s Head,” “The Blade’s Path,” and “Hog Day Afternoon.” The Gotham season 4 trailer shows Bruce Wayne becoming a masked vigilante, so that plot may kick off in “They Who Hide Behind Masks.” “The Demon’s Head” refers to Ra’s al Ghul, who appeared in the season 3 finale and is played by Alexander Siddig (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine).

“Hog Day Afternoon” sounds like it may be the episode that introduces Professor Pyg. Executive producer John Stephens has confirmed the Batman villain will appear this season. If that is in fact the episode featuring Professor Pyg, expect it to be an especially brutal and disgusting episode.

14 RUMOR: ALFRED WILL FIGHT RA'S

gotham-ras-al-ghul

During the Summer TCA Press Tour, actor Sean Pertwee said that Gotham season 4 will reveal more of Alfred Pennyworth’s origins. He talked about what it’s like to play a more “badass” version of Alfred, who excels at fighting. Fellow cast member Cory Michael Smith praised Pertwee on how good he is at action sequences.

Conspicuously, the interviewer pivoted to talking to Alexander Siddig, who plays Ra’s al Ghul. Siddig teased that Ra’s would be unpacking a lot of the core relationships in Gotham. Of course, Alfred’s mentor relationship with Bruce is one of the most fundamental relationships. Gotham season 3 ended with Ra’s encouraging Bruce Wayne to put a sword through Alfred. So, it would make perfect sense for Alfred to square up against Ra’s next season.

13 FACT: JIM WILL TEAM UP WITH SOFIA FALCONE

In a recent interview, actor Ben MacKenzie talked about Jim Gordon’s surprising new alliance. “Season 4 opens up a few months later and into this void of villainy Penguin has asserted himself. He’s licensing crimes. He’s basically usurped the law completely and controls what crime is permitted in Gotham. Against that tide, Jim is left alone. No one is on his side including Harvey. That will lead him to find new allies and that includes Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone.”

Crystal Reed (Teen Wolf) has been cast as Sofia. In the Batman comic canon, Sofia Falcone was the identity of The Hangman, a serial killer who targeted police officers. It has not been confirmed whether this version of Sofia will become The Hangman, but we can hope.

12 RUMOR: WE'LL SEE BRUCE WAYNE BECOME BATMAN

With the arrival of Ra’s al Ghul at the end of Gotham season 3, it’s only a matter of time until Bruce Wayne turns into Batman. The promotional materials for Gotham season 4 feature Bruce looking out over the city with the subtitle “Dawn of Night.”

Actor David Mazouz has been hinting heavily that his character will become Batman this season. In a Facebook Live video, he said, “Every character is going through a hugely significant transformation, becoming the characters that they’re destined to be. My character in particular gets a lot of help in doing so from the guy sitting next to me.” This was in reference to Alexander Siddig as Ra’s al Ghul. At the end of the video, he said “the night is coming”-- or “the knight is coming.”

11 FACT: LEE, ED NYGMA AND SOLOMUN GRUNDY WILL TEAM UP

Butch_Gilzean

Lee Tompkins and Butch Gilzean both hate Edward Nygma, with good cause. In Lee’s case, it’s because he murdered her friend Kristin Kringle. In Butch’s case, it’s because he kidnapped him and Tabitha Galavan and cut off Butch’s hand. But, at San Diego Comic Con, John Stephens explained that Butch will suffer amnesia when he becomes Solomon Grundy.

Stephens said, “When Butch becomes Solomon Grundy, he doesn't remember his former life, so when he runs into Ed Nygma, he doesn't remember that he wants to rip his head off. And Ed, who is suffering the effects of being frozen for three months, needs Grundy's help to get strong again.” Meanwhile, Lee has obviously become a very different person. She was willing to purposely inject herself with the Alice Tetch virus. It’s not a big shock that the person she’s become would team up with these two.

10 RUMOR: JIM AND PENGUIN WILL FACE OFF

In the past, Oswald Cobblepot and Jim Gordon have worked together. They’ve even seemed like friends at times. But, it seems that won’t be the case in Gotham season 4. In an interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Robin Lord Taylor spoke about Oswald’s relationship with Jim. He said, “This is probably the most diametrically opposed they have ever been.”

We know that Oswald will be teaming up with Zsasz (who we learned last season has no issue with trying to murder Jim) while Jim aligns himself with new character Sofia Falcone. With Oswald more powerful than he’s ever been and Jim struggling with isolation, the stage is set for an interesting uphill battle for Gotham’s hero. Hopefully, the war between the two will result in a brutal face off.

9 FACT: ED WILL LOSE MENTAL CAPACITY

Gotham-Season-3-Riddler-Costume-Images

In the Gotham season 3 finale, Victor Fries -- under orders from Oswald Cobblepot -- hit Ed Nygma with his cold gun, freezing him into a solid cube of ice. The Gotham season 4 trailer shows Oswald gleefully displaying Ed at the Iceberg Lounge. But, don’t worry, Ed will eventually unfreeze. At San Diego Comic Con, actor Cory Michael Smith didn’t want to reveal exactly how Ed would unfreeze.

He did say “someone will help him out.” Could this be the beginning of his new friendship with Lee or Grundy? Smith did explain how he will change after being frozen. His body will unfreeze without side effects, but he’ll have diminished mental capacities. Smith explained that it’s a big adjustment for Ed, who's always defined himself by his ability to make quick calculations.

8 RUMOR: PENGUIN AND RIDDLER COULD COME TOGETHER

The relationship between Penguin and Riddler was one of the most interesting elements of Gotham season 3. It was the reason Gotham became edge-of-your-seat television. Last season they both came as close as you can get to murdering the other without an actual death. But, there may be a chance for a reconciliation. Their prison escape last season showed their willingness to work together when they have to.

The upcoming team up between Barbara and Tabitha shows that Gotham is a place where even people who’ve murdered each other can come together. At a San Diego Comic-Con panel, actor Cory Michael Smith said that he has hope for their relationship. He said, “These two are so connected. It’s such a beautiful, complicated relationship. I feel like their ambition is complimentary and so I think there are ways that they could team up again.”

7 FACT: BARBARA, SELINA AND TABITHA WILL FORM A POWER TRIO

In the Gotham season 3 finale, Tabitha Galavan straight up murdered Barbara Kean. But, it looks like the power of love and friendship really can overcome anything. At San Diego Comic-Con, actress Erin Richards said, “She’s going to form an alliance with Tabitha and Selina. We’re gonna have a bit of a female power base in Gotham which we’re really excited about.”

It seems Barbara’s ability to patch things up with Tabitha will come from changes in Barbara as a person. Richards said, “She’s going to be a completely different character again. She’s coming back, she’s going to be trained by Ra’s al Ghul and she’s going to be a lot more calm and centered. Still trying to fight for power in Gotham against Penguin… but with a lot more clarity this time.”

6 RUMOR: BRUCE AND SELINA WILL GET TOGETHER

Gotham-Bruce-Selina

Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle didn’t end up in a great place last season, but the connection between the two is so strong it seems likely they’ll persevere. At the Heroes and Villains Fan Fest in Nashville, actor David Mazouz suggested they may come together towards the end of season 4, after both characters have gone through major developments.

He said, “I think their relationship as we know it will crumble. But -- I don’t want to say too much about this, but -- Selina will be making a leap into proto-Catwoman and her evolution. And Bruce, obviously, as we saw at the end of season 3, will be making massive, massive leaps into his evolution as proto-Batman. And maybe proto-Batman and proto-Catwoman might have a relationship.”

5 FACT: WE WON'T SEE HARLEY QUINN

Barbara-as-Harley-Quinn-on-Gotham-Cropped

Fans have been speculating about whether Harley Quinn will appear in Gotham for a long time. Many people theorized that either Barbara Kean or Lee Tompkins would eventually become Harley Quinn. At San Diego Comic-Con, John Stephens said that although Barbara shares many traits with Harley, we’ll never actually see Harley on Gotham, as he further elaborated.

“It was my fault. I had thought I had said and I might have not said it: We’ll see a Harley Quinn-esque character. Because in our mind Barbara was taking on a lot of the ethos and spirit of Harley Quinn, you know, her love of anarchy and violence. All those things that make Harley, Harley in many ways, we were trying to put into Barbara. So I thought that she was becoming a Harley Quinn-esque character. But we’re never going to see Harley Quinn. Sorry about that.”

4 RUMOR: SELINA WILL BECOME A VILLAIN

4 Gotham Selina Kyle Close Up

The Gotham season 3 finale teased Tabitha Galavan becoming a mentor to Selina Kyle. She even introduced Selina to using the whip. It seems that in season 4, Tabitha may push Selina further into becoming a villain. At a Wondercon panel, actress Camren Bicondova said she’s ready to play Selina going bad. She said, “If going bad comes with more stunts and more weaponry than bring it to me.”

Later, the panel moderator pointed out actress Jessica Lucas as the character who would teach Selina “the real dark ways.” Selina’s confirmed team up with Tabitha and Barbara could lead to her going full villain, at least briefly. At San Diego Comic-Con, actress Erin Richards hinted that the three of them would work on a new set that would be “something better than a club.”

3 FACT: JONATHAN CRANE WILL RETURN

gotham-scarecrow

The Gotham season 4 trailer shows the return of Jonathan Crane (Charlie Tahan), who appeared in two episodes of Gotham season 1, titled “The Fearsome Dr. Crane” and “The Scarecrow.” When Crane was last seen, he was taken into a hospital with alarming brain activity. When Jim Gordon asked if he would ever recover, a doctor explained that Crane would be forced to hallucinate his worst fears for the rest of his life.

The scene ended with Crane hallucinating a scarecrow attacking him. The trailer first shows Jonathan in his room, scribbling drawings of scarecrows. Towards the end of the trailer, a man enters his room and asks, “Crane?” Crane approaches in a full costume and says, “Jonathan Crane isn’t here anymore. This is the Scarecrow.”

2 RUMOR: JIM AND BRUCE WILL FIGHT AT THE END OF THE SEASON

bruce-jim-gotham

Clearly, Bruce Wayne becoming a masked vigilante will be a huge part of Gotham season 4. At first, Jim Gordon will be unaware of his vigilantism. But a confrontation between the two seems inevitable. At a San Diego Comic-Con panel, actor Ben Mackenzie said that Jim and Bruce will “circle each other, probably towards the end of the season.”

Executive producer John Stephens added that the story in the back half of the season will be Gotham’s version of Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One. In this story, Jim is under orders from the police commissioner to bring in Batman for vigilantism, but Jim ultimately catches Batman and then lets him go. The story ends with Jim ready to work together with Batman against The Joker.

1 FACT: PENGUIN WILL TEAM UP WITH ZSASZ

zsasz-penguin-gotham

Gotham season 3 built up a new “family” for Oswald Cobblepot in the form of his army of freaks. This team consisted of Ivy Pepper aka Poison Ivy, Victor Fries aka Mr. Freeze and Bridgit Pike aka Firefly. With their help, he was able to take out Edward Nygma and regain control of the city. But, Gotham season 4 will feature a new alliance for Oswald.

During a Facebook Live interview with the Gotham cast, actor Robin Lord Taylor said that Victor Zsasz will be a new ally for Penguin in season 4. Taylor promised that this would be a fun combination of characters. He said, “Of course the only person that Penguin is allied with is the biggest psychopath in all of Gotham. It’s a fun little duo that we’re exploring.”
