With confirmation that Harley Quinn is indeed slated to arrive on the dark streets of Fox's "Gotham" before the end of the show's current season, fans quickly began to form theories around how the iconic DC Comics character will be introduced to the show's mythos. Moreover, many fans expanded on existing theories that viewers have already met the future villain in the form of Erin Richards' Barbara Kean.

Though she debuted on the show as the wife of Detective Jim Gordon, and her surname has ties to Batman/Bruce Wayne's family in the comics, "Gotham" quickly set Barbara down her own twisted path. After her wedding dissolved, and she spent some time in Arkham Asylum, Barbara has surged back with a vengeance in Season 3, becoming one of the city's premiere villains as the co-head of a Gotham City crime syndicate. She's also become increasingly unhinged since "Gotham's" pilot episode, leading many fans to wonder if there's a red and black color scheme in her future.

In a recent discussion with the press, “Gotham” executive producer, director and writer Danny Cannon was cagey about whether Barbara is poised to transform into Harley Quinn. Not only did Cannon refuse to repudiate the theory outright, he went on to say that whatever happens, Barbara will undergo a significant change by the time Season 4 rolls around.

"I can’t. I can’t," Cannon said. "All I can tell you is, the great thing, the joy of working with Erin is the range. The reason we changed her character, [is] because we knew what she could do. We’re like, 'We can’t keep you in one place. You’ve got to keep evolving.' So she’s going to evolve again. That’s all I can tell you."

Will the "evolution" of Barbara Kean involve an oversized mallet and perhaps the revelation that her real name is Harleen Quinzel? Time will tell, and the road to Harley's arrival kicks off in earnest when "Gotham" returns for its final run of Season 3 episodes tonight, April 24.

Starring Ben McKenzie as Detective Jim Gordon, “Gotham” airs Mondays at 8 pm ET/PT on Fox. The series also stars David Mazouz as young Bruce Wayne, Camren Bicondova as young Selina Kyle, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Morena Baccarin as Leslie Thompkins, Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney and more.
