The MonsterVerse may live on.

Legendary, the studio behind Godzilla vs. Kong and its predecessors, is in talks with director Adam Wingard for the next installment in the franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, no deal has been finalized yet. However, were Wingard to return, he would be the first director to helm more than one MonsterVerse installment. As discussions have just started, there are few details available on the sequel. However, a possible title being floated inside the studio is Son of Kong. (A film with the same name was released in 1933.)

Wingard spoke earlier on a potential sequel, saying, "I would absolutely love to continue. The clear starting point we teed up, exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there. This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the [Titans] come from. He added, "We tee up some mystery in [Godzilla vs. Kong], things I want to see resolved and explored and pushed to the next level. If I have the opportunity, I know what I will do. It's up to Warner Bros and Legendary, if they have an appetite."

Godzilla vs. Kong debuted in theaters and on HBO Max in late March for Warner Bros. The film has been a massive hit, grossing $86.7 million domestic and $406.6 million worldwide, with a profit of $96.4 million. The film has also been well received by fans and critics, earning a Certified Fresh rating and a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Godzilla vs. Kong is the fourth film in Legendary's MonsterVerse. Previous films include Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). An animated series titled Skull Island set in the same universe will debut on Netflix in the near future.
