As Warner Bros. and Legendary Enterainment continue building up their MonsterVerse cinematic universe, Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty is looking back to the original 1954 film Godzilla and teasing an important connection between the two.Early on Monday, Dougherty tweeted out an image of the Oxygen Destroyer to mark the film's 41st day of shooting.

The Oxygen Destroyer is a weapon created by Dr. Daisuke Serizawa (Akihiko Hirata) that appeared in the original Godzilla. In the wake of Tokyo's destruction, Dr. Serizawa used the device to kill both the original Godzilla and himself so that no one would ever be able to re-create the immensely dangerous weapon. What this might mean for the world-famous kaiju's fate in the film is still unknown.

According to the film's official synopsis, "The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species -- thought to be mere myths -- rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance."

The 1954 film Godzilla was originally released in Japan as Gojira, then Americanized and brought over to U.S. cinemas as Godzilla, King of the Monsters. There's no telling yet what role the Oxygen Destroyer may play in Dougherty's film (which goes by roughly the same name), but the inclusion of the other three monsters all but confirms that the movie will not be a recreation of the original film. Still, the bomb could play a similar role in the 2017 film, or it could simply be a nostalgia-fueled Easter egg.
