Go behind the scenes of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Hateful Eight’

Quentin Tarantino’s hotly anticipated eighth feature film won’t arrive in theaters until Christmas, but an early look at the production of “The Hateful Eight” gives fans a preview of the filmmaker’s winter Western.

In footage, shot on-set, Tarantino is seen working with the crew and directing cast members Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Walter Goggins and Michael Madsen as all brave the elements to make the tense, Civil War-era drama, which also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth, Zoë Bell and Bruce Dern.

Attentive viewers can pick up on the dialogue being delivered in the scenes being filmed, and start to piece together the movie’s rough-and-tumble plot and characters, while aspiring filmmakers can take a peek into the Hollywood creative process to see just how exciting–and slow–it can be. For those only used to seeing the glossy final on-screen product, the video gives a rare look under the hood.

The footage shows Tarantino behind the camera, shooting the action on an Ultra Panavision 70 camera, as part of his effort to bring the movie to life “in glorious 70mm.” Tarantino has long held that he will only make ten feature films over his career before retiring, putting him near to the finish line, although he has recently floated the idea of moving into television.

“The Hateful Eight” arrives in theaters December 25.
