Dan Aykroyd still isn't giving up hope on Ghostbusters 3. The actor has been trying to will the project into existence for years and, despite many setbacks, he still came on Larry King Now recently to reveal new plot details from the planned film.

"We’re going to have to cast. We need four new Ghostbusters. We need four new Columbia students," he told Larry King. "It’s based upon new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University. Basically, there’s research being done that … I can say that the world or our dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width, and time, become threatened by some of the research that is being done. And Ghostbusters, new Ghostbusters have to come and solve the problem."

Aykroyd obviously has a clear idea of what he wants this movie to be, although it seems doubtful it will be made any time in the near future. During the interview, he reinforced that Bill Murray still isn't interested in returning to the world of Ghostbusters -- but he has a part if he wants it.

In addition to Aykroyd, director Ivan Reitman and writers Gene Stupnitsky, Lee Eisenberg and Etan Coen have been trying to develop a premise for Ghostbusters 3 that will make it to the big screen. During an interview with Esquire in 2012, Aykroyd confirmed he's not giving up hope on the project.

"I’ve worked on every draft in the last three years, as Ivan has, and now we have a story and a draft that everybody seems to agree would make the third movie,” Aykroyd said. “At this point, I think we’re closer than we ever have been. And because of the ever-shifting sands and nature of the motion-picture business, I will just say that hopefully, at some point, it will be morphing into what is known in the business as a [Aykroyd mimes air quotes] 'production number XP39789.' ... If it does not happen, the life of Dan Aykroyd and his family and friends will be quite full without Ghostbusters 3.”
