Lucasfilm has debuted the first trailer for Strange Magic, an animated comedy-adventure based on a story by none other than George Lucas.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the fairy-tale musical uses popular songs from the past six decades to help tell the story of a cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their misadventure sparked by a battle over a powerful love potion.

Directed by Gary Rydstrom (Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation) from a screenplay by David Berenbaum (Elf), Irene Mecchi (Brave) and Rydstrom, the film stars Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Meredith Anne Bull, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein and Peter Stormare.

Strange Magic opens Jan. 23.
