Gaiman Calls Hiddleston “Sandman” Comment “A Joke”

Fans wishing to see Tom Hiddleston trade in his horned Loki helmet and cape for a mess of black hair and robe to portray the titular character in the upcoming “Sandman” feature film are about to be disappointed. “Sandman” creator and author Neil Gaiman recently admitted via Twitter that his recent comments about Hiddleston playing Morpheus on the big screen were just a joke.

Earlier this week Gaiman was quoted as saying in a Radio Times interview that the “Thor” actor would be a great leading man for the film based on the Vertigo property.

“There was a time Johnny Depp would’ve been a great Morpheus, but now he’s too old and it’s fine,” Gaiman told RadioTImes.com. “I think the first time I saw Benedict [Cumberbatch] was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, ‘wow, that’s incredibly Morpheus.'”

With Cumberbatch now confirmed to play Doctor Strange in the hero’s feature film, Gaiman jokingly admitted he had to look elsewhere for his Sandman. “Tom Hiddleston is still out there,” he said. “And the truth is, as far as I’m concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off.”

While “Sandman” does not yet have a release date, it still has director Joseph Gordon-Levitt and producer David Goyer attached. Goyer has also spoken about Gaiman’s active involvement.

“I hesitate to definitively say when it might go before the cameras,” Goyer told Deadline, “but the one thing different between other iterations and ours is that Neil Gaiman has been in the room with us and is a vital part of the team.”
