FX’s Legion ‘Can’t Ever’ Cross Over With X-Men Films

In the final episodes of its first season, FX’s Legion finally laid out links between the reality-warping drama and its Marvel Comics source material, with the primary antagonist revealed as longtime X-Men foe the Shadow King. What’s more, it was confirmed — through visual representations, at least — that David Haller’s father is X-Men founder Charles Xavier. However, if fans thought those were the first steps in connecting the TV series to the Fox film franchise, they’re sorely mistaken.

“It has to exist on its own plane,” longtime X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner said during the Legion Q&A at Comic-Con International in San Diego. “It can’t ever cross over with the movies — or why watch it?”

That probably shouldn’t come as a big surprise to those who have followed interviews with series creator Noah Hawley, who previously pledged that Legion wouldn’t “suddenly look to the comics for storylines” in its second season. “But you may see ideas or characters or images that are familiar to you,” he added.

Still, the drama did give nods to both the X-Men comics and the films, with a glimpse of Xavier’s wheelchair with its signature “X” design, and a creative chalk-drawing reenactment of his battle with the Shadow King. Hawley told reporters in March that David’s search for his biological father is something he’d like to pursue, but conceded it’s a complicated proposition.

“It’s a creative conversation, but it’s also a sort of corporate conversation, you know, on some level, in terms of the movie studio and their relationship to the X-Men and the characters they want in the movies and want to protect potentially,” he said at the time. “And were we to want to have Professor X on the show, or even Patrick Stewart on the show, James McAvoy or one of those actors, is a conversation both with the actor and with the studio. So, I don’t know, I haven’t really dived into that quandary yet, but certainly I need to start thinking about it.”

During the Q&A Thursday at Comic-Con, Legion star Dan Stevens revealed he had asked Stewart about reprising his role as Professor X on the show. However, when — or if — David’s father appears, and how a reunion might thread the needle of X-Men/Legion continuity, seems up in the air.

“On some level it would depend on who would do it,” Hawley said in response to question about whether Legion would depict a younger or older Xavier. “When we reach that part of the story — is it funnier if it’s the older one or the younger one? I don’t know. It’d be great if you were older than your dad.”
