Get Caught Reading, the nationwide literacy campaign supported by the Association of American Publishers, has announced its support for Free Comic Book Day, an event designed to spur interest in comic books as an original American art form.
At the same time, the Free Comic Book Day Committee (a group of publishers, retailers, and distributor representatives responsible for coordinating Free Comic Book Day) has declared its support for the literacy efforts spearheaded by Get Caught Reading. “From our perspective, we’ve always known that there was a direct correlation between comic books and literacy,” said Committee Member Barry Lyga. “While in the past some have looked down on comics, nowadays more and more schools, teachers, librarians, and parents have come to understand the potential comic books have to teach reading and instill in children a life-long love of the same. We’re pleased that Get Caught Reading acknowledges and supports this trend.”
AAP Vice President Kathryn Blough said, “We are just thrilled to be working with the Free Comic Book Day initiative to spread the reading message further. Our aim is to remind people of the joys of reading, and comic books are a perfect example of reading that is both fun and inspirational.”
Additionally, Get Caught Reading and Free Comic Book Day have agreed to work together in the future to gather testimonials that show popular celebrities reading comic books and graphic novels as part of Get Caught Reading’s ongoing ad campaign in dozens of mainstream publications and hundreds of libraries throughout the U.S.
Free Comic Book Day will take place on May 3, 2002 in comic book stores around the world. Anyone can go to a participating comic book store and receive a comic book absolutely free on that day.

The event takes place during May, which has also been designated as Get Caught Reading Month.

Get Caught Reading was launched by AAP in 1999 to promote reading among people of all age groups. With the support of more than 20 celebrities – including Spider-Man, Robin Williams, Sammy Sosa, Whoopi Goldberg, and First Lady Laura Bush – and more than 200 members of Congress, the campaign shows by example that reading is fun. AAP is the national trade organization of book publishers, with approximately 300 members that include most of the major commercial book publishers in the United States, as well as smaller and non-profit publishers, university presses, and scholarly societies.
FREE COMIC BOOK DAY is a joint effort of dozens of publishers, thousands of retailers, and Diamond Comic Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of English language comics.
