It’s a good time to be a Jim Henson fan. In addition to Disney’s fantastic revival of The Muppets, and the developing sequel, there’s also a film based on the Henson-created children’s show Fraggle Rock in the works at New Regency. According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Regency has now tapped Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian to pen the script.
Bykrit co-wrote Rango and worked on storyboards for the film as well as the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Manugian did voice work on Rango and also served as an executive at Cartoon Network. The duo wrote a heist-style take on Jason and the Argonauts called Fleeced that’s set up at Disney.
Fraggle Rock started off as a Canadian series but was imported to the United States during its run from 1983 to 1987. The Henson-created show featured a group of underground dwellers known as Fraggles that had a penchant for breaking out into song and eating the structures built by tiny green people called Doozers. With the writers in place, look for news about a director and possibly stars to start coming out this summer.
