Fox’s Daredevil Getting a Rewrite

Fox has hired David James Kelly to rewrite the script for director David Slade’s Daredevil, Deadline reports. Fringe writer-producer Brad Caleb Kane penned the previous draft, based on Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s acclaimed “Born Again” storyline.

In the influential 1986 arc, Daredevil’s drug-addicted girlfriend Karen Page sells Matt Murdock’s secret identity in exchange for a shot of heroin. The information finds its way to the Kingpin, who begins a six-month crusade to destroy his nemesis, dismantling Murdock’s life — he loses his money, his home and his law license — and pushing the Man Without Fear over the edge.

Development of a follow-up to Fox’s 2003 Daredevil movie had seemingly stalled until March 2011, when Slade, best known for 30 Days of Night and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, was announced to direct. He has said the film “will [bear] no relation to the previous Daredevil,” which starred Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Colin Farrell and Michael Clarke, and grossed $179 million worldwide.

In addition to Daredevil, Fox has The Wolverine, the sequel to X-Men: First Class and the promise of more Marvel mutant movies. Studio CEO Tom Rothman also confirmed at CinemaCon that Chronicle director Josh Trank is attached to the Fantastic Four reboot.
