Forget What You’ve Read: The Hobbit Still On Track For 2012

If any tale called out for a Tolkien-esque map to clarify matters, it’s “The Ongoing Saga of The Hobbit Release Date.”

As you may recall, just this morning IMAX issued a press release announcing, among other things, that the first film in Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro’s two-part adaptation of The Hobbit would debut in December 2013 — some two years later than originally expected. This caused countless fans to mutter about how much they hates the tricksy IMAXes.

But now Heat Vision reports that IMAX made a mistake: The first Hobbit movie won’t be released in December 2013 but rather in December 2012. It’s not the 2011 date that New Line and MGM Studios targeted way back in 2007, but it’s still better than 2013, right?

Jackson, who’s co-writing the screenplays with longtime collaborator Philippa Boyens, revealed earlier this month that drafts for both films have been delivered to MGM, leaving him “pretty optimistic” that shooting could begin before the end of this year.
