The afterlife is definitely no picnic in the second trailer for Sony's Flatliners.

The sequel to Joel Schumacher's stylish 1990 psychological thriller, the film centers on five medical students who, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond this world, participate in a series of dangerous experiments, stopping their hearts from increasing lengths of time to trigger near-death experiences and giving each of them a firsthand account of the afterlife. As in the original Flatliners, the students soon learn this knowledge comes with a cost, as they’re haunted by the sins of their pasts.

Although this Flatliners was initially assumed to be a remake, original star Kiefer Sutherland clarified last year that he’s actually reprising his role as Nelson Wright in this version, meaning that it’s a sequel. Sadly, it doesn't appear as if any of the other original stars -- Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt and Kevin Bacon -- are making any cameos.

In Flatliners, five medical students, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience – giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are each haunted by the sins of their pasts, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.

Directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) from a script by Ben Ripley (Source Code), Flatliners stars Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons.
