Although Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t arrive in theaters for another two years, fans may have just gotten their first clue to the plot of Marvel’s eagerly anticipated cosmic adventure.
An intriguing but (naturally) brief logline has sprung up on several film-industry databases, including It’s On the Grid, describing the movie as being “about a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”
That suggests Vance Astro, aka Major Victory, could serve as the audience’s entry point into the — literally — alien universe with the Guardians, as in Marvel comics he was an Air Force pilot turned astronaut who volunteered for the United States’ first manned interstellar mission. That makes the Guardians the “futuristic ex-cons.” But what’s that “something” they possess that everyone wants? One or more of the Infinity Gems, perhaps?
Officially announced last month at Comic-Con International, Guardians of the Galaxy is being rewritten by Chris McCoy, who’ll work from a well-regarded draft by Nicole Perlman.
Although the Guardians have boasted a large and changing roster over the past four decades, the concept art Marvel debuted at Comic-Con features Drax the Destroyer, the human resurrected in the body of an alien to combat Thanos; Groot, the extraterrestrial tree monster; Star-Lord, the interplanetary police officer; Rocket Raccoon, the fearless genetically altered raccoon; and Gamora, the most dangerous woman in the universe.
Part of Marvel’s second wave of films, Guardians of the Galaxy is set to open Aug. 1, 2014.
