Production is now underway on CBS' "Supergirl" pilot, and Warner Bros. Television has commemorated the occasion with the official release of the first two images of series star Melissa Benoist in full costume as the iconic DC Comics superhero.

One image shows a rather serious Supergirl in full costume, while the other is a more cheerful headshot:

The costume is designed by Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood, who also designed costumes for the title heroes of "The Flash" and "Arrow." "In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today."

The new "Supergirl" costume certainly does follow closely with classic depictions of the character -- the cape, "S" symbol, boots and red skirt are all there -- albeit with more of a slightly muted color palette, similar to The Flash's TV costume. The costume is noticeably more covered up than some recent comic book incarnations -- no visible midriff, and tights have been added.

"Supergirl" received a series commitment from CBS back in September. "Arrow" veterans Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg are both on board as executive producers, along with Ali Adler and Sarah Schechter. Glen Winter is directing the pilot.
