Although the opening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a week away, New Line Cinema has already begun promoting the next two installments of Peter Jackson’s trilogy with the first images from The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again (both courtesy of EW.com).
The first shows Martin Freeman as a wide-eyed Biblo Baggins amid the dragon’s pile of treasure in the second film, while the other reveals the first official look at Orlando Bloom reprising his role as Legolas (alongside Luke Evans’ Bard the Bowman) in the trilogy’s conclusion. J.R.R. Tolkien fans know, of course, that while Legolas plays a prominent role in The Lord of the Rings he doesn’t actually appear in The Hobbit; but then again neither do Galadriel, Saruman or Radagast the Brown.
Jackson’s three-movie adaptation of Tolkien’s beloved fantasy novel stars Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen, and features returning Lord of the Rings stars Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom and Andy Serkis. The ensemble cast also includes Richard Armitage, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas and Aidan Turner.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens Dec. 14, followed by The Desolation of Smaug on Dec. 13, 2013, and There and Back Again on July 18, 2014.
