Ian McKellen has played his fair share of iconic characters, including Magneto in the X-Men series and Gandalf in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. He's about to add one more to the resumé: Sherlock Holmes.

The first photo of McKellen as Sherlock in the upcoming Bill Condon film Mr. Holmes has been released. The acting legend plays a 93-year-old Sherlock Holmes, frustrated with the deterioration of his brilliant brain, and left wondering if there are still cases left unsolved.

It's an adaptation of A Slight Trick of the Mind, which takes place in the late 1940s and sees the older Holmes reopening an old case. His investigation takes him as far as Japan, and on that note, Deadline reports that famed Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, The Last Samurai and many more) has joined the cast as Umezaki, a plant enthusiast who collaborates with Holmes.

In addition to McKellen and Sanada, Mr. Holmes stars Laura Linney as Mrs. Munro, Sherlock's housekeeper and caretaker.

The film is expected to arrive in 2015.
