Despite a string of casting announcements, few details have been revealed about director Roland Emmerich's sequel to "Independence Day." However, ahead of Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, Fox has dropped the first clues about the film's premise.

Collider snagged an information sheet on the studio's upcoming slate that provides this broad overview:

After "Independence Day" redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

OK, it's really broad, but at this point we'll take it. The film is set 20 years after the 1996 original, meaning Earth has had a lot of time to prepare for another alien attack. However, clearly it wasn't enough.

Opening June 24, 2016, "Independence Day 2" stars franchise veterans Vivica A. Fox, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner, as well as franchise newcomers Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, Sela Ward, William Fichtner, Maika Monroe, Joey King, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Travis Tope, DeObia Oparei, Chin Han and Garrett Wareing.
