Dorothy Gale is off to see the Wizard! NBC has dropped the first trailer for "Emerald City," their upcoming ten-episode miniseries that reimagines 1939's classic "Wizard of Oz." In it, she's whisked away to Oz by the force of a tornado, only for her rough landing to kill the Wicked Witch of the East. The trailer sets her off on her journey down the Yellow Brick Road, but fans of the original "Wizard of Oz" film won't recognize much of what follows.

According to the trailer, Oz is losing its magic; a discussion between two men on a parapet reveals that there is no magic left in Oz. Nevertheless, Dorothy encounters it in spades, especially when the Wicked Witch of the West holds her prisoner and demands to know how her sister was killed. The scarecrow is a flesh-and-bone man strung up in a field, albeit one who has lost his memory, and it appears as though the Tin Man will be something of a steampunk cyborg. The trailer also promises massive fight scenes.

The series won’t be a strict adaptation of the classic tale; “Emerald City” will star “True Detective’s” Adria Arjona as a 20-year-old Dorothy Gale, who is transported to the Land of Oz alongside her K9 police dog. A previous report from THR describes the series as featuring “competing kingdoms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy” — which makes “Emerald City” sound a little more like “Game of Thrones.”

If “Emerald City” sounds familiar, its because it was originally slated for the 2013-2014 TV season and then picked up with a straight-to-series order in January 2014. Initial plans for the series fell through when NBC and original producers Josh Friedman and Matt Arnold failed to agree on a vision for the series. The show has returned, with David Schulner (“Dracula”) and Shaun Cassidy as producers.
