Fans may have to wait longer than expected to see the conclusion HBO's hit drama Game of Thrones. Following the delay of its seventh season, debuting July 16, the show's final season will possibly be pushed back to 2019.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, HBO programming president Casey Bloys suggested the possibility of another delay in order for showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss to cleanly wrap up the series with the six-episode Season 8.

"By the time the final season airs, Dan and David will have been at this for 12 years," Bloys said. In regards to the season airing in 2018 or 2019, he responded, "Yeah. They have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule. We’ll have a better sense of that once they get further into the writing."

The interview also contained details and clarifications on the Game of Thrones spinoff show planned for HBO. Although in its early stages, Benioff and Weiss will not be involved with the projects. After author George R. R. Martin revealed multiple prequel projects in the works, Bloys wanted to keep fan expectations in check.

"The idea is not to do four shows," he said. "The bar set by [Benioff and Weiss] is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it."
