Any preconceived notions regarding “The Fate of the Furious,” the newly retitled eighth film in the blockbuster “Fast and Furious” franchise, can be thrown out the window after the release of the first trailer.
In three minutes and 17 seconds of footage, we see a member of la Familia betray the team, a bitter rival brought in to work with them, The film series’ first female antagonist, and, of course, fast cars and exotic locales.
There is a lot to process, which is why we’re here to highlight the best moments from the action-packed trailer.
Dominic “Turncoat” Toretto
The trailer wastes no time letting us know Dom (Vin Diesel) has betrayed his family to go rogue. In the immediate aftermath of a successful mission, which involves a failed diversion by Roman and a humongous wrecking ball, we hear a conversation between Cipher (F&F’s newest arrival, Charlize Theron) and Dom in which she says, “Your family is about to go up against the only thing they can’t handle — you.” The next thing you know, Dom sideswipes Hobbs’ (Dwayne Johnson) truck, causing it to crash. This stunning betrayal sets the tone for the rest of the footage.
Not much is known about Cipher, save that she’s “the very definition of high-tech terrorism,” according to Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell). We get a glimpse at some of that high-tech gear in one scene, as the room behind Cipher is filled with helmets, masks, knives, flak jackets, and more. Cipher has a full arsenal of weapons at her disposal, which she provides to Dom for their caper.
What could Cipher have on Dom in order to turn him back to a life of crime? We may want immediate answers, but this will likely be a running mystery throughout “The Fate of the Furious” — and possibly into the ninth and tenth installments of the franchise.
Hobbs in Jail With Deckard Shaw
At some point in the movie, perhaps after Dom leaves Hobbs wrecked on the side of the road, Hobbs is sent to a high-security facility, complete with an orange jumpsuit. This raises a few questions: 1) Hobbs is and has always been on the right side of the law, so what did he do that would land him behind bars? Perhaps Cipher leaks information to the authorities regarding Hobbs involvement with wanted fugitives?
Hobbs isn’t locked up alone, as we also see the villain of “Furious 7,” Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) in a cell next to him. It’s safe to assume he still holds a vendetta against Dom and Hobbs over the death of his younger brother, Owen Shaw. We’ll check back in on Hobbs and Shaw a bit later in our rundown.
Megan Ramsey is Back
Nathalie Emmanuel’s Ramsey, the hacker from “Furious 7” returns and is a full member of the team. One of the best aspects of the “Fast and Furious” franchise is how it has expanded it’s cast over the years. What started as a small crew of street racers has grown to a point where they could rival The Avengers for team members. Ramsey may have chosen a permament co-pilot seat as well, as she can be seen riding alongside Tej in a number of scenes.
An Automobile Tug of War
Stunned that Dom would turn his back on them, they confront their former friend in the middle of a city intersection and tag his Charger with grappling hooks. What sticks out about this image is Dom is surrounded by four cars — and a truck. The truck obviously belongs to Hobbs, so that leaves the four cars in possession of Roman, Tej, and Letty. Three drivers for four cars, begging the question: Who is behind the wheel of the fourth car?
Mr. Nobody Busts Hobbs and Shaw Out of Jail
The mysterious Mr. Nobody decides the team needs some help in dealing with Dom and Cipher, so he stages a prison break for Hobbs and Shaw. This mirrors how Dom went from a car thief in the first film to working alongside Paul Walker’s Brian in subsequent films.
There’s no love lost between Hobbs and Shaw, as Hobbs screams, “I will beat you like a Cherokee drum!” Before the two can square off, Mr. Nobody arrives to recruit them to his cause. The only way they can catch Dom is if they work together. As the old saying goes, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
Dom as Captain America
Among scenes of cars racing across a barren ice field, machine gun fire and explosions is Dom, clad in all black from head to toe, holding a riot shield while gunfire rains down on him. This brings back memories of one of the big action scenes in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” as Steve Rogers fought his former best friend, Bucky Barnes, on the streets of Washington, D.C.
And speaking of cars speeding on ice …
We Have a New Set Piece For the Big Race Scene
Each “Fast and Furious” movie has a signature action scene, usually involving vehicles being driven during insane circumstances. We’ve had cars flying in the air across bridges, and cars falling out of airplanes in the sky. The “wow” factor increases with each film, to the point where it wouldn’t surprise us if we eventually get cars in outer space.
For “The Fate of the Furious,” we hit the NOS button and travel to the Barents Sea, giving us a great color contrast between white snow/ice and a bright orange Lamborghini. For this not fully familiar with the F&F franchise’s magic, try not to wrack your brain too hard regarding how a luxury sports car would gain traction on snow. It’s really just best to turn your mind off and enjoy the action.

“We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Truck”
In what is most likely the climax of the film, we see our team racing across the Barents Sea when a submarine explodes out of the ice beneath them and gives chase. Now that is one way to make an entrance. One can imagine Roman screaming, “I did not sign up for this!” as Tej makes a witty comment back at him. Hobbs joins in the fun with the line, “We’re gonna need a bigger truck.”
Are Cipher and Dom an Item?
The two outlaws storm the team’s compound with an explosion, filling the room with dust and smoke. Roman, Hobbs, and Letty are shown laid out on the floor. Letty questions Dom on whether he’s going to turn his back on family. She may have her answer, as Cipher lays a kiss on her husband. Letty is stunned, but Dom doesn’t show much emotion during the smooch, looking more like a man who is doing a job he doesn’t love.
Directed by F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton,” “The Italian Job”), the film stars returning franchise veterans Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell, joined by newcomers Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren. “The Fate of the Furious” opens April 14, 2017.
