It was previously revealed that Season 4 would be set in 1950's Kansas City where two criminal syndicates are fighting for control of an underground economy made up of exploitation, corruption and drugs. Rock stars as Loy Cannon, the head of an African American crime family, who sends his youngest son Satchel (Rodney Jones) to the head of the Italian mafia as part of a peace deal. In return, mafia head Donatello Fadda (Tommaso Ragno) sends his youngest son Zero (Jameson Braccioforte) to Loy.

The Season 4 ensemble cast also includes Jason Schwartzman, Salvatore Esposito, Ben Whishaw, Jessie Buckley, Jack Huston, Andrew Bird and Timothy Olyphant. The new season was originally scheduled to premiere on April 19 but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will debut almost three and a half years after the previous installment, which aired back in April 2017.
