Great news, Family Guy fans: Seth MacFarlane is going to host the 85th annual Academy Awards.
“We are thrilled to have Seth MacFarlane host the Oscars,” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a joint statement. “His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh. He will be the consummate host, and we are so happy to be working with him.”
MacFarlane seemed similarly excited, saying, “It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars. thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.”
MacFarlane has had a great year already. Ted dominated at the box office and was one of the surprise hits of the summer. Family Guy, American Dad! and The Cleveland Show continue MacFarlane’s dominance of animated television, and he has even made the rounds himself by presenting at the Emmys. The fact that he hosted the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen and Donald Trump last year only helps solidify his standing as a great pick for the Oscars.
This is still a pretty big step up for MacFarlane. Hopefully he won’t have to tone down his specific brand of comedy too much because he’s headed to the big leagues (which is our nice way of saying that we hope there’s at least one Peter Griffin appearance during the awards show). MacFarlane also is pretty much friends with everyone in Hollywood, so we bet he’s going to be able to get a good number of celebrities in on some skits as long as the Academy allows him to pull that sort of stunt. Even if he has a musical opening sequence to rival the one Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway pulled off in 2009, we’ll be happy.
The Oscars will air Feb. 24, 2013.
