First appearing 1986's Captain America #323, John Walker was given powers by Dr. Karl Malus, resulting in him having superhuman physical abilities. The character, who has also gone by the name Super-Patriot, became popular enough to get his own series in 1993. Walker briefly inherited Steve Rogers' shield in the comics after the Captain America refused to work with the Commission for Super Human Activities.

Sharon Carter first appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She's the great-niece of Peggy Carter, Steve Rogers' love interest and one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D. VanCamp's return was previously reported in May, though the news was not confirmed until now.

VanCamp and Russell will be joining Daniel Bruhl, who will reprise his role as Helmut Zemo for the series. The series itself is set to focus on Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame.

Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson will reunite in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ in fall 2020.
