Falcon Isn’t in ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ as Far as Anthony Mackie Knows

When the Avengers assemble again next year in Joss Whedon’s Age of Ultron, the team’s ranks will swell with, at the very least, the additions of Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch. But it appears as if one of the newest faces in the Marvel Cinematic Universe won’t make the cut: Anthony Mackie’s Falcon.

“Chris [Evans] is a good friend of mine. The movie starts in three weeks,” the actor, whose character debuts April 4 in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, told MovieWeb. “I know he’s read the script. He’s like, ‘Yo, man, I read the Avengers script. It’s good.’ I was like, ‘Really?’ He said, ‘Yeah, Joss is doing rewrites, but it’s good. I was like, ‘Great! So … am I in it?’ And he says, ‘I’ve got to go. I’ll be back.’ What do you mean? Why can’t you just tell me if I’m in the movie? No one will tell me, not one person, so I gave up on it.”

As the website notes, Mackie could still receive a last-minute call from Whedon & Co., although that would seem to suggest a relatively minor role for the Falcon. But even if he doesn’t, he still has The Winter Soldier ahead of him — it’s receiving overwhelmingly positive early buzz — and, if Thursday’s report can be believed, a likely place in the May 2016 Captain America 3.

Opening May 1, 2015, The Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. They’re joined by Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and James Spader as Ultron. Although Marvel hasn’t confirmed the casting, it’s been widely reported that Paul Bettany will play The Vision.
