Comic book artist Tradd Moore -- the co-creator of "The Legend of Luther Strode" with writer Justin Jordan, and artist of "All-New Ghost Rider" and more -- has branched out into the world of film with an illustration for "The World of Kanako," a Japanese crime thriller opening in the states this week. SPINOFF has the exclusive first look at the image, colored by Felipe Sobreiro, along with a look at its development and comments from Moore on his process.

First, here's the final product:

Here's a look at Moore's early thumbnail sketch of the peice:

"As the name implies, thumbnail sketches are small," Moore said. "Mine are typically around 3"x4", give or take an inch, but it’s at this embryonic stage that I pull the ideas from my imagination and shape them into a real, visible thing. It’s the blueprint that I work from. Composition, character placement, posture, perspective, narrative themes, etc; everything major is planned here. That said, I like this stage to be loose, as it allows for me to stay engaged and make changes on the fly as I continue working on the piece."

And a an inked version:

"This is the most time consuming, most brainless, and most enjoyable part of the process for me," Moore said. "At this point, the difficult decisions have all been made and the framework is built -- putting ink to the page sets those decisions in stone and turns my sketch into a bona fide illustration. It's here that all the ideas I’ve shaped really come to life."

And a colored version without the film's logo:

"Before I know it, a couple days have passed by, I smell like a goat, I’ve lost all my friends, my life isn’t what I wanted it to be, and I have a finished piece of art," Moore said. "Then I send the piece along to my colorist, the fantastic Felipe Sobreiro in this case, and I cackle."

Directed by Tetsuya Nakashima, "The World of Kanako" was originally released in Japan in 2014, and Drafthouse Films will released the film in select theaters in the states this Friday, Dec. 4, along with VOD. The official synopsis: "An uncompromising revenge thriller of operatic scope, 'The World of Kanako' is a non-stop visual and emotional assault to the senses as it follows troubled ex-detective Akikazu (Kôji Yakusho, '13 Assassins,' 'Babel') on the hunt for his missing teenage daughter, Kanako. What he discovers in his search is an unsettling and harrowing web of depravity - surrounding both Kanako and himself. As Akizaku stumbles along a shocking trail of drugs, sex and violence, he finds himself woefully unprepared for the revelations that affect all he holds dear."
