BOOM! Studios has announced a new comic book series based on 1982 fantasy film "The Dark Crystal," and CBR has the exclusive first look at one of the variant covers for the debut issue.

Sana Takeda, artist of "Monstress" at Image Comics, illustrated the cover, which is a subscription variant for "The Power of the Dark Crystal" #1, scheduled for release in February. "The Power of the Dark Crystal" will be a 12-issue series from BOOM! Studios' Archaia imprint -- long the home of licensed comics from the Jim Henson Company -- from writer Simon Spurrier and artists Kelly & Nichole Matthews.

"Like the ending of 'The Dark Crystal, in which the duality of good and evil is collapsed and reconciled, the story of 'The Power of the Dark Crystal' is that of reconciling the inner and the outer worlds—perhaps even the unconscious and the conscious," Lisa Henson, President and CEO of The Jim Henson Company, said in a statement. "This is an amazing and original theme."

A full look at Takeda's cover follows below, along with solicitation text for "The Power of the Dark Crystal" #1.

Synopsis:

In celebration of the 35th anniversary of Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, return to the world of Thra in an official sequel to the beloved fantasy film.

Discover an all-new race of creatures called Firelings that live in a realm near the planet’s core, based on official character designs by Brian Froud.

Years have passed since the events of the original film, and though Jen and Kira have ruled Thra as King and Queen, bringing Gelfling back to the land, they have become distracted by power and can no longer feel or see the needs of the world the way they once did.
